Contraceptive implant

A small rod inserted beneath the skin that releases a progestin to prevent pregnancy for several years. It is a long-acting, reversible contraceptive that can be removed.

Etonogestrel: A synthetic progestin used in contraceptive implants and some other hormonal contraceptives. It is the hormone released by the widely used Nexplanon implant.
Long-acting reversible contraception: Contraceptive methods that provide extended protection and can be discontinued without permanent loss of fertility. The implant belongs to this group because it works for years and can be removed.
Contraceptive efficacy: The ability of a contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy under specified conditions of use. The implant is among the most effective reversible methods because it needs no daily action.
Progestin: A synthetic hormone with effects similar to progesterone. Etonogestrel is a progestin, the active drug class used by the implant.
Ovulation: The release of an egg from an ovary during the menstrual cycle. The implant primarily prevents pregnancy by suppressing ovulation.
Intrauterine device: A contraceptive device placed inside the uterus, available in hormonal and copper forms. It offers similarly long-lasting reversible contraception but is placed in the uterus.
Irregular menstrual bleeding: Unpredictable changes in bleeding frequency, duration, or amount during menstrual cycles. Unpredictable bleeding is a common reason for dissatisfaction or removal.
Progesterone: A steroid hormone involved in the menstrual cycle and maintenance of pregnancy. Progestins mimic some progesterone effects while suppressing ovulation and thickening cervical mucus.
Cervical mucus: Fluid produced by glands in the cervix that changes in consistency across the menstrual cycle. Progestin thickens it, making sperm passage through the cervix more difficult.
Combined oral contraceptive pill: A daily contraceptive pill containing both estrogen and a progestin. Unlike the implant, it requires regular dosing and contains estrogen.
