Contrast effect

The contrast effect is a bias in which judging a person, object, or outcome shifts away from the qualities of a recently encountered comparison.

Context effect: A change in judgment caused by the circumstances or information surrounding a target. The contrast effect is one way context shifts judgments.
Interview: A structured or conversational meeting used to assess a candidate or gather information. A candidate can seem unusually strong or weak depending on the people interviewed just before.
Assimilation bias: A judgment bias in which a target is perceived as more similar to a comparison or context. Assimilation moves judgment toward the comparison; contrast moves it away.
Ebbinghaus illusion: A visual illusion in which a circle's apparent size depends on the sizes of surrounding circles. Surrounding circles make a target appear smaller or larger through visual contrast.
Assimilation effect: A bias in which a judgment shifts toward qualities of a comparison or surrounding context. It shifts judgments toward a comparison, opposite to contrast.
Performance appraisal: A formal assessment of an employee's work and contributions. An employee's rating can shift with the performance of recently evaluated coworkers.
Halo effect: A bias in which an overall impression of a person influences judgments of specific traits. The halo effect spreads impressions across traits; contrast changes judgment relative to another target.
Water temperature perception: The perception of water's warmth or coolness, shaped partly by recent thermal exposure. A hand adapted to cold water experiences lukewarm water as warm, unlike a hand adapted to hot water.
Anchoring effect: A bias in which an initial value influences later estimates, even when it is irrelevant. Both biases make judgments depend on prior information, but anchoring pulls estimates toward it.
Price perception: The way consumers interpret a product's price relative to expectations and alternatives. Nearby prices can make a target price seem unusually high or low.
