Controlled-access highway

A major road that limits entry and exit to designated interchanges, separates opposing traffic, and restricts direct access from adjacent properties.

Grade separation: A road or railway crossing in which routes pass at different elevations rather than intersecting at the same level. Overpasses and underpasses keep cross traffic from interrupting highway flows.
Traffic flow: The movement of vehicles through a transportation network, measured by factors such as volume, speed, and density. Highway design aims to sustain flow while managing demand and disruptions.
Arterial road: A major urban or regional road that carries through traffic while connecting to other roads and allowing varying degrees of property access. Arterials often have frequent intersections and direct access that highways prohibit.

Traffic merging: The process of joining two streams of traffic into a shared roadway lane. Ramp traffic must merge into faster-moving highway traffic.
Expressway: A high-capacity road with limited access, though its precise design requirements vary by jurisdiction. The term overlaps with controlled-access highway but does not always require full access control.
Autobahn: Germany’s federal motorway network, known for controlled access and sections without a general speed limit. It is a prominent national example of high-speed, limited-access roads.
Induced demand: The increase in travel that follows an expansion of transportation capacity as people change routes, times, or destinations. Added highway capacity can attract trips and eventually increase congestion.
