Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory

A convention signed by Britain and Qing China in 1898 that leased the New Territories and nearby islands to Britain for 99 years.

First Sino-Japanese War: A war fought between Qing China and Japan from 1894 to 1895, ending in China’s defeat and the Treaty of Shimonoseki. China’s defeat intensified foreign pressure that helped Britain secure the lease.
