Conversion of units

Conversion of units expresses a measured quantity in a different unit without changing its value, using an equivalence ratio between units.

Conversion factor: A ratio of equivalent quantities used to change a measurement from one unit to another. Multiplying by an equivalent ratio changes the unit while preserving the quantity.
Physical quantity: A property that can be measured and expressed as a number multiplied by a unit. A conversion changes the unit attached to the quantity, not the quantity itself.
Temperature conversion: The transformation of a temperature value between scales such as Celsius, Fahrenheit, and kelvin. Temperature scales require formulas because their zero points and increments differ.
Dimensional conversion: A conversion between units that represent the same physical dimension, such as meters and feet. It uses a fixed equivalence factor, unlike conversions between distinct scales.
Dimensional analysis: A method that uses units and dimensions to check equations and calculations. Tracking units reveals whether a conversion is arranged correctly.
Unit of measurement: A defined reference amount used to express the magnitude of a quantity. Conversions relate one reference amount to another.
Currency conversion: The exchange of an amount in one currency for its equivalent in another at a given rate. Exchange rates function as conversion factors that can vary over time.
Affine transformation: A transformation consisting of a linear map followed by a translation. Temperature-scale changes include an offset and therefore are not pure scaling.
International System of Units: The internationally agreed system of measurement units, built around seven base units. Its defined units provide standard references for many conversions.
Measurement: The process of assigning a value to a quantity by comparison with a standard. A conversion rewrites a measurement in another unit.
