Coordination chemistry

Coordination chemistry studies compounds in which central atoms or ions bind surrounding ligands. It explains their structures, bonding, reactions, and properties.

Ligand: An ion or molecule that donates an electron pair to a central atom or ion in a coordination complex. Ligands bind the central species and help determine its charge, shape, and reactivity.
Coordinate covalent bond: A covalent bond in which both shared electrons are supplied by one bonding partner. Ligand-to-metal electron-pair donation is a core model for metal–ligand bonds.
Homogeneous catalysis: Catalysis in which the catalyst and reactants occupy the same phase. Soluble metal complexes enable catalytic cycles with tunable ligands and oxidation states.
Organometallic chemistry: The study of compounds containing bonds between metal atoms and carbon atoms of organic groups. It overlaps with coordination chemistry but centers on metal–carbon bonds.
Alfred Werner: A Swiss chemist who developed the modern theory of coordination compounds and received the 1913 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His structural theory explained coordination compounds that older valence models could not.
Coordination number: The number of atoms directly bonded to a central atom in a coordination entity. It counts the donor atoms arranged around a metal center.
Crystal field theory: A model that explains metal d-orbital energies through electrostatic interactions with surrounding ligands. It accounts for d-orbital splitting and many observed colors and magnetic properties.
Cisplatin: A platinum coordination compound used as an anticancer drug that forms DNA adducts. Its square-planar platinum center binds cellular targets after ligand substitution.
Ionic compound: A compound composed of cations and anions held together by electrostatic attraction. Simple ionic bonding contrasts with the directional ligand binding emphasized in coordination complexes.
Sophus Mads Jørgensen: A Danish chemist known for studying coordination compounds and disputing Werner's structural proposals. His experiments produced the evidence Werner used to establish his coordination theory.
