Copa Libertadores

The Copa Libertadores is CONMEBOL’s annual club football competition, contested by leading teams from its South American member associations. Its champion qualifies for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the CONMEBOL Recopa Sudamericana.

CONMEBOL: The governing body for football in South America, responsible for organizing its major regional competitions. CONMEBOL organizes the tournament and sets its regulations.
Campeonato Sudamericano de Campeones: A 1948 South American tournament featuring the champions of seven national leagues. Its intercontinental club format helped inspire the later Libertadores competition.
Carlos Bianchi: An Argentine football manager and former striker who won four Copa Libertadores titles as a coach. His Boca Juniors and Vélez Sarsfield sides made him the competition’s most successful coach.
Santos FC: A Brazilian football club based in Santos, globally renowned for its 1960s teams led by Pelé. Santos won consecutive Libertadores titles in 1962 and 1963.
FIFA Intercontinental Cup: An annual club competition that matches continental champions from different confederations. The Libertadores champion represented South America in the former annual contest against Europe’s champion.
Copa Libertadores qualification: The process by which clubs earn places in the Copa Libertadores through domestic league and cup results. Member associations allocate places largely through domestic competition results.
Copa de Campeones de América: The original name of the South American club tournament launched in 1960. The competition began under this name before adopting its familiar title.
Marcelo Gallardo: An Argentine football manager and former midfielder who coached River Plate from 2014 to 2022. He led River Plate to Libertadores titles in 2015 and 2018.
Boca Juniors: An Argentine football club based in Buenos Aires, among South America’s most decorated teams. Its Libertadores titles and fierce rivalry with River Plate have made it a defining tournament club.
FIFA Club World Cup: A FIFA competition in which leading club teams from multiple confederations compete for a world title. The Libertadores champion qualifies as South America’s representative in the tournament.
