Copernican system

A mathematical model placing the Sun near the center of the planetary world, with Earth rotating daily and orbiting yearly while planets move in circular combinations.

Heliocentrism: The family of astronomical models that place the Sun at or near the center of the planetary system. The Copernican system is an influential, mathematically detailed form of heliocentrism.
Ptolemaic system: An Earth-centered astronomical model using circles and epicycles to represent the motions of the Sun, Moon, and planets. It was the established framework Copernicus reorganized around a moving Earth and a central Sun.
Tycho Brahe: A Danish astronomer whose precise observations supported a geoheliocentric system with a stationary Earth. His alternative preserved much of Copernicus’s planetary ordering while denying that Earth moved.
Tychonic system: A geoheliocentric model in which the Sun orbits a stationary Earth while the other planets orbit the Sun. It reproduced much of the Copernican ordering while avoiding a moving Earth.
Copernican principle: The idea that Earth and humanity do not occupy a privileged position in the universe. The system’s displacement of Earth helped inspire a broader principle of cosmic non-privilege.
Retrograde motion: The apparent reversal of a planet’s usual direction against the background stars. Earth’s changing position makes outer planets appear to reverse direction without a physical loop in their paths.
Aristarchus of Samos: An ancient Greek astronomer who proposed that Earth rotates and revolves around the Sun. His surviving heliocentric proposal predates Copernicus by roughly eighteen centuries.
Johannes Kepler: A German astronomer who formulated three laws describing planetary orbits as ellipses. Using Tycho’s observations, he replaced Copernicus’s circular planetary paths with ellipses.
Geocentrism: The family of models that places Earth at the center of the cosmos or planetary system. Copernicus’s central departure was to give Earth planetary motion instead of a fixed central position.
Galileo affair: The seventeenth-century conflict between Galileo Galilei and the Roman Inquisition over heliocentrism and scriptural interpretation. The system’s status became entangled with institutional authority and the interpretation of evidence.
