Copper(I) oxide

Copper(I) oxide, or cuprous oxide, is an inorganic compound with formula Cu₂O. It is a red solid in which copper has oxidation state +1.

Copper: Copper is a metallic chemical element with symbol Cu and atomic number 29. Copper atoms form the cations in Cu₂O.
Cuprite: Cuprite is the naturally occurring mineral form of copper(I) oxide. Its cubic crystal structure is the familiar solid form of Cu₂O.
Copper oxide solar cell: A copper oxide solar cell converts light into electrical energy using copper oxide as an absorber or functional layer. Cu₂O is investigated as an earth-abundant light-absorbing semiconductor.
Copper(II) oxide: Copper(II) oxide is a black inorganic compound with formula CuO, in which copper has oxidation state +2. CuO differs from Cu₂O in copper oxidation state, composition, and color.
Oxygen: Oxygen is a chemical element with symbol O and atomic number 8. Oxygen forms the oxide anions in Cu₂O.
Semiconductor: A semiconductor is a material whose electrical conductivity lies between that of a conductor and an insulator and can be controlled. Cu₂O conducts through charge carriers in its electronic bands.
Antifouling paint: Antifouling paint limits the growth of organisms on surfaces immersed in water. Copper(I) oxide can release copper compounds that inhibit marine organisms.
Copper(I) sulfide: Copper(I) sulfide is a copper sulfide compound containing copper in the +1 oxidation state. It shares Cu(I) chemistry but pairs copper with sulfur rather than oxygen.
Oxidation state: Oxidation state is the formal charge assigned to an atom in a chemical substance under a set of rules. Copper’s +1 oxidation state gives the compound its name.
Band gap: A band gap is the energy range separating occupied and unoccupied electronic states in a solid. Cu₂O’s band gap determines which photons it absorbs and how it conducts.
