Coppicing

Coppicing is a woodland management practice in which trees are cut near ground level so stumps or roots produce new shoots. Repeated cutting maintains trees as multi-stemmed growth.

Coppice stool: The living stump or root crown from which a coppiced tree produces new shoots. It survives each harvest and supplies the shoots that renew the tree.
Coppice with standards: A woodland system combining regularly cut coppice stools with scattered trees grown to maturity. It combines recurring underwood harvests with a long-term timber crop.
Neolithic: The later part of the Stone Age, marked in many regions by farming and settled communities. Archaeological evidence places coppicing among early woodland-use practices.
Ancient woodland: Woodland that has persisted continuously since a regionally defined historical date. Coppice stools and layered stands can preserve evidence of long woodland continuity.
Epicormic shoot: A shoot that grows from a dormant or newly activated bud on a tree's trunk or branches. Dormant buds can generate shoots after the tree is cut back.
Short rotation coppice: A plantation system that repeatedly harvests fast-growing trees, often willow or poplar, for biomass. It applies coppicing to rapid, planned production of fuel or biomass.
Woodland history: The study of how forests and woodlands have changed through human use and natural processes. Coppicing shaped woodland structure and records of past land use.
Biodiversity: The variety of life across genes, species, and ecosystems. Coppicing can increase habitat variety while reducing it for species needing uncut cover.
Coppice rotation: The planned interval between cutting successive areas of a coppice woodland. Rotation length sets how long shoots grow before harvest.
