Coquimbo Region

An administrative region in north-central Chile, extending from the Pacific coast to the Andes. Its principal urban centers include La Serena and Coquimbo.

Elqui Province: A province in Coquimbo Region that includes La Serena, Coquimbo, and the Elqui Valley. It contains the region’s capital and largest coastal urban area.
Elqui Valley: A valley in Coquimbo Region known for vineyards, pisco production, and clear skies. Its vineyards and observatories make it one of the region’s best-known landscapes.
Atacama Region: An administrative region in northern Chile, north of Coquimbo Region. It borders Coquimbo to the north across a transition toward the Atacama Desert.
Fray Jorge National Park: A Chilean national park known for a fog-fed temperate forest amid semiarid surroundings. It preserves an unusual coastal forest in the region’s dry environment.
Limarí Province: A province in Coquimbo Region centered on Ovalle and the Limarí River basin. Its river basin and agricultural lands form the region’s central interior.
Pisco: A grape brandy produced in Peru and Chile, including in Coquimbo Region. The region’s vineyards supply grapes for Chilean pisco production.
Valparaíso Region: An administrative region in central Chile, south of Coquimbo Region. It shares Coquimbo’s southern boundary and links the area to central Chile.
Punta de Choros: A coastal settlement and marine wildlife destination in northern Coquimbo Region. Its nearby islands support important colonies of seabirds and marine mammals.
Choapa Province: The southernmost province of Coquimbo Region, bordering Valparaíso Region. It completes the region’s three-province structure in the south.
Chilean mining: The extraction of minerals that has long shaped Chile’s economy and settlement. Copper and iron mining are significant industries in the region.
