Coral Sea Islands

The Coral Sea Islands are an Australian external territory of small islands, cays, and reefs in the Coral Sea, northeast of Queensland.

Coral Sea: A marginal sea of the southwestern Pacific Ocean bordered by northeastern Australia and island arcs. The territory’s islands and reefs are dispersed across this sea.
Coral Sea Marine Park: An Australian marine park protecting a large area of ocean and reefs in the Coral Sea. Its protected waters overlap much of the territory’s surrounding marine environment.
James Cook: A British naval officer and explorer who charted parts of the Pacific during three major voyages. His voyages helped bring the Coral Sea region into European charts.
Marine conservation: The protection and sustainable management of marine species, habitats, and ecosystems. The territory’s isolation makes conservation a central management concern.
Coral reef: A marine ecosystem built largely from calcium-carbonate structures produced by corals and other organisms. Reefs make up much of the territory’s physical extent.
Marine protected area: A sea or coastal area designated for conservation and regulated human activities. This framework governs conservation across much of the islands’ waters.
Great Barrier Reef Expedition: A British scientific expedition that studied the Great Barrier Reef from 1928 to 1929. Its research reflects the early scientific interest in the region’s reefs.
Illegal fishing: Fishing that violates national laws, regional rules, or international obligations. Monitoring remote waters is difficult, leaving enforcement an ongoing challenge.
Cay: A low island formed from sediment deposited on the surface of a coral reef. Several of the territory’s emergent landforms are small reef-built cays.
Sea turtle: A marine reptile whose life cycle includes coastal nesting and extensive ocean migrations. Some islands provide nesting habitat for sea turtles.
