Cormac McCarthy

Cormac McCarthy (1933–2023) was an American novelist and playwright whose spare prose, stark violence, and explorations of fate and human limits shaped works including Blood Meridian and The Road.

Blood Meridian: Cormac McCarthy’s 1985 novel follows a teenage runaway among scalp hunters on the nineteenth-century U.S.–Mexico border. Its brutal borderlands and Judge Holden make it McCarthy’s most expansive meditation on violence.
Southern Gothic: A literary mode that uses grotesque characters, dark humor, and decayed settings to examine the American South. McCarthy’s early Tennessee novels adapt its regional grotesquerie and moral darkness.
