Corolla

The corolla is the collective set of petals in a flower, forming the floral whorl inside the calyx. Its petals may be separate or fused.

Petal: A usually colorful, leaflike floral part that forms one unit of a corolla. Each petal is one component of the corolla.
Sympetaly: The condition in which petals are fused into a single corolla. Petal fusion changes the corolla’s shape and can restrict access to floral rewards.
Floral formula: A symbolic notation summarizing the number, arrangement, fusion, and symmetry of floral organs. Its symbols record petal number and whether the corolla is fused.
Salverform corolla: A corolla with a narrow tube ending in a flat, spreading limb. Its distinct tube-and-limb structure is a recognizable corolla form.
Perianth: The non-reproductive floral envelope, comprising the calyx and corolla or undifferentiated tepals. The corolla is one of the perianth’s two principal whorls.
Polypetaly: The condition in which the petals of a corolla remain separate. It contrasts with fused corollas and permits petals to move independently.
Floral diagram: A schematic cross-section showing the number and arrangement of a flower’s organs. The diagram shows the corolla’s position and relation to other floral whorls.
Bilabiate corolla: A two-lipped corolla formed by petals arranged into an upper and lower lip. The lips create a specialized landing and access structure for pollinators.
Calyx: The collective set of sepals forming the outermost floral whorl. The calyx lies outside the corolla and often protects the developing flower.
Floral symmetry: The pattern of symmetry displayed by a flower’s organs around its axis. Corolla symmetry can determine which pollinators can approach the flower effectively.
