Corpus callosum

The corpus callosum is the brain’s largest commissural fiber tract, linking corresponding and other regions of the left and right cerebral hemispheres to support interhemispheric communication.

Commissural fibers: Axons that cross the brain’s midline to connect structures on opposite sides. The corpus callosum is the largest tract in this broader class of midline-crossing connections.
Split-brain: A condition in which severed or absent connections between the cerebral hemispheres limit their direct exchange of information. Callosotomy can produce this disconnection, exposing functions normally coordinated across the hemispheres.
Diffusion MRI: An MRI method that measures the directionality of water diffusion to infer properties of tissue microstructure. It helps map callosal pathways in living brains without tracing individual axons directly.

Interhemispheric inhibition: The influence by which activity in one cerebral hemisphere suppresses activity in corresponding regions of the other. Callosal pathways can help regulate competition between motor and other cortical regions.
Callosal topography: The organized mapping of cortical origins and destinations across regions of the corpus callosum. Different callosal regions connect different cortical areas rather than distributing fibers randomly.
