Cortisone

Cortisone is an inactive corticosteroid that the body can convert into cortisol. As a medication, it reduces inflammation and suppresses immune activity.

Cortisol: A steroid hormone that regulates metabolism, stress responses, and immune activity. Cortisone is converted into this active hormone in many tissues.
Cortisone injection: An injection of a corticosteroid into or near an inflamed area to reduce symptoms. Local injections deliver corticosteroid treatment to joints and other tissues.
Hydrocortisone: The pharmaceutical name for cortisol, an active glucocorticoid hormone. Unlike cortisone, hydrocortisone is already in the active hormone form.
Edward Calvin Kendall: An American biochemist who isolated and characterized adrenal cortical hormones. His work included isolating cortisone from adrenal tissue.
11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase: An enzyme family that interconverts cortisol and cortisone. Its type 1 enzyme converts cortisone into cortisol, enabling local hormone activity.
Corticosteroid therapy: Medical treatment using corticosteroids to reduce inflammation or replace deficient hormones. Cortisone is one option within this wider class of treatments.
Prednisone: A synthetic corticosteroid converted in the liver into active prednisolone. It is a commonly used oral prodrug with different potency and dosing from cortisone.
Tadeus Reichstein: A Swiss chemist who isolated and studied hormones produced by the adrenal cortex. His research helped establish cortisone’s chemical identity and preparation.
Glucocorticoid receptor: A receptor that binds glucocorticoids and alters gene expression. Cortisol produced from cortisone acts through this receptor.
Rheumatoid arthritis: A chronic autoimmune disease that causes joint inflammation and damage. Corticosteroids can temporarily control inflammation during active disease.
