Corvée

Corvée is compulsory unpaid labor owed to a ruler, state, or landholder, often in place of taxes or rent. It has served public works, military logistics, and agricultural estates.

Labor tax: A tax paid through required work rather than money or goods. Corvée is a specific form of taxation collected as labor.
Corvée in ancient Egypt: Compulsory labor imposed by ancient Egyptian authorities, including work on state projects. Egyptian evidence illustrates corvée’s early use in mobilizing large workforces.
