Cosimo I de’ Medici

Cosimo I de’ Medici was the second duke and first grand duke of Tuscany, ruling from 1537 to 1574. He consolidated Medici power and made Florence the center of a more centralized Tuscan state.

Duchy of Florence: A hereditary state centered on Florence, established under Medici rule in the sixteenth century. Cosimo inherited this duchy and expanded its territory and governing reach.
Alessandro de’ Medici: The first hereditary duke of Florence, assassinated in 1537 by his cousin Lorenzino de’ Medici. Alessandro’s assassination left the Florentine succession open to Cosimo.
Eleonora di Toledo: A Spanish noblewoman who married Cosimo I in 1539 and became duchess of Florence. Her marriage strengthened Cosimo’s Spanish connections and supported his dynastic household.

Vasari: An Italian painter, architect, and writer best known for his biographies of Renaissance artists. Cosimo employed Vasari to reshape Florence’s buildings and represent Medici power.
Florence: A city in central Italy that became the political and cultural center of the Tuscan state. Cosimo concentrated government and dynastic display in Florence.
Spanish Empire: A global monarchy ruled by the Spanish Habsburgs from the late fifteenth century onward. Cosimo secured his position through accommodation with the Habsburg power dominating Italy.
Maria Salviati: A Medici noblewoman, daughter of Lucrezia de’ Medici and mother of Cosimo I. Her lineage connected Cosimo to the senior Medici branch and strengthened his dynastic claim.
