Cosmic variance

Cosmic variance is the statistical uncertainty that arises because observations sample only one realization of the universe’s underlying fluctuations and structures.

Cosmic microwave background: Electromagnetic radiation released when the early universe became transparent, now observed as a nearly uniform microwave sky. Its measured temperature pattern is one finite-sky realization of primordial fluctuations.
Cosmological parameter estimation: The inference of numerical properties of the universe from astronomical observations and physical models. Parameter uncertainties cannot shrink below the information limit set by cosmic variance.
Shot noise: Statistical fluctuations caused by counting a finite number of discrete events or objects. Galaxy counts have shot noise that can fall with more objects, unlike cosmic variance.
Multi-tracer method: A technique that compares differently biased tracers of the same cosmic density field to reduce sample-variance limits. Shared modes can cancel in tracer ratios, partly evading variance in selected measurements.
Cosmic microwave background anisotropy: Small directional variations in the temperature and polarization of the cosmic microwave background. These sky fluctuations provide a direct setting for calculating cosmic variance.
Planck (spacecraft): The European Space Agency spacecraft that mapped the cosmic microwave background from 2009 to 2013. Planck’s large-scale temperature measurements approached the variance floor of the observable sky.
Instrumental noise: Random or systematic measurement errors introduced by an observing instrument. Lower instrumental noise improves measurements until cosmic variance becomes the dominant floor.
Cosmic variance cancellation: A strategy for suppressing sample variance by combining observables that share the same underlying cosmic modes. It seeks information beyond the limit affecting any single observable alone.
Spherical harmonics: Functions on a sphere used to represent patterns by angular scale and orientation. CMB analyses separate fluctuation power into angular modes, each with limited samples.
Cosmic microwave background experiments: Observational programs that measure the temperature and polarization of the cosmic microwave background. Their sensitivity gains eventually encounter sample variance rather than instrument noise.
