Cossack Hetmanate

A Cossack-ruled polity in central and eastern Ukraine, established during the Khmelnytsky uprising and governed by hetmans from 1648 until its gradual abolition under Russian rule.

Hetman: A senior military and political leader in Cossack states, especially the Cossack Hetmanate. The hetman headed the polity and directed its government and armed forces.
Khmelnytsky uprising: A revolt beginning in 1648, led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky against the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The uprising created the conditions for a Cossack-ruled polity.
The Ruin: A period of civil conflict and political fragmentation in the Cossack Hetmanate after Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s death. Competing hetmans and foreign interventions divided the polity.
Ivan Mazepa: A hetman of the Cossack Hetmanate from 1687 to 1709 who allied with Charles XII of Sweden against Peter I. His revolt and defeat marked a turning point in the erosion of Cossack autonomy.
General Military Chancellery: The central administrative office of the Cossack Hetmanate, responsible for government correspondence and records. It carried out the hetman's orders and managed routine administration.
Bohdan Khmelnytsky: A Cossack hetman who led the uprising against the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth beginning in 1648. His leadership established the Hetmanate and shaped its early institutions.
Andrusovo Truce: A 1667 agreement between Russia and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth that divided Ukrainian lands between them. It partitioned the Hetmanate’s territory without Cossack consent.
Battle of Poltava: A 1709 battle in which Peter I’s Russian army defeated Charles XII’s Swedish army and its allies. The defeat destroyed Mazepa’s bid to escape Russian control.
Cossack starshyna: The senior officer elite who held military and administrative offices in Cossack communities. Its officers staffed the Hetmanate’s governing institutions and shaped political decisions.
Battle of Zhovti Vody: A 1648 battle in which Cossack and Tatar forces defeated a Polish force during the Khmelnytsky uprising. The victory helped turn the uprising into a successful challenge to Commonwealth authority.
