Coulometry

Coulometry is an electroanalytical method that determines the amount of a substance from the total electric charge consumed or produced in its reaction.

Faraday's laws of electrolysis: The quantitative laws relating electric charge passed through an electrolyte to the amount of chemical change. They provide the stoichiometric basis for converting measured charge into analyte amount.
Karl Fischer titration: A chemical method for determining water content through its stoichiometric reaction with iodine and sulfur dioxide. In coulometric Karl Fischer analysis, electrolysis generates the iodine used to quantify trace water.
Electrochemical cell: A system of electrodes and an electrolyte in which chemical and electrical energy are interconverted. Coulometric reactions take place in an electrochemical cell.
Amperometry: An electroanalytical method that determines analyte concentration from electric current measured at a controlled potential. Amperometry uses current as the signal, whereas coulometry uses its time-integrated total.
Faraday constant: The electric charge per mole of elementary charges, approximately 96,485 coulombs per mole. It converts charge into moles of electrons in coulometric calculations.
Coulometric titration: A titration in which a reagent is generated electrochemically and its amount is determined from charge. It applies coulometry by producing titrant in a precisely measurable amount.
Working electrode: The electrode at which the analyte's electrochemical reaction is studied or carried out. Its surface is where the measured analyte reaction occurs.
Voltammetry: An electroanalytical method that measures current while varying the potential applied to an electrode. Voltammetry typically interprets a current–potential response rather than total reaction charge.
Controlled-potential coulometry: A coulometric method that holds the working electrode at a selected potential while the analyte reacts. Potential control selects the reaction and helps distinguish analyte from interfering species.
Trace analysis: The measurement of very small amounts of chemical substances in a sample. Coulometric reagent generation can support sensitive measurements of small analyte quantities.
