Council of Basel

The Council of Basel was a Catholic church council held from 1431 to 1449, marked by conflict over papal authority, church reform, and conciliar governance.

Conciliarism: The doctrine that a general church council holds supreme authority in the Church, including over the pope. The council’s claim to act independently of the pope became a major test of this doctrine.
Western Schism: A split in the Catholic Church from 1378 to 1417, during which rival claimants asserted the papacy. The schism made church unity and the limits of papal authority urgent questions.
Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges: A 1438 French ordinance that adopted selected conciliar reforms and limited papal influence in France. It translated some Basel-era reform principles into French law after the council’s authority waned.
