Council of the Indies

The Council of the Indies was a Spanish royal body that advised the crown and oversaw government, justice, and administration in the Americas and the Philippines.

Laws of the Indies: The body of Spanish laws governing its overseas territories, compiled in a 1680 code. The Council drafted and reviewed legislation that shaped colonial government.
Spanish colonization of the Americas: The conquest, settlement, and rule of American territories by Spain from the late fifteenth century onward. The expanding empire created the administrative demands the Council was formed to manage.
