Council of Troubles

The tribunal established by the Duke of Alba in 1567 to punish opponents of Spanish rule in the Netherlands. It became notorious for executions and confiscations during the Dutch Revolt.

Duke of Alba: Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, the Spanish commander and governor who led the Netherlands from 1567 to 1573. He established the tribunal and directed the campaign it served.
Dutch Revolt: The uprising against Habsburg rule in the Low Countries that began in 1568 and led to Dutch independence. The tribunal’s creation was part of the crisis that escalated into this revolt.

William the Silent: The prince of Orange who led resistance to Spanish rule during the Dutch Revolt. The tribunal condemned him in absentia, deepening his break with Habsburg authority.
Luis de Requesens: The Spanish governor of the Netherlands who succeeded the Duke of Alba in 1573. His administration ended the tribunal’s most active period.
Dutch national identity: A sense of shared political and cultural belonging among people in the Netherlands. Stories of Alba’s repression became part of narratives about resistance and Dutch origins.
