Counseling intervention
A deliberate therapeutic strategy or action used by a counselor to help a client address psychological, behavioral, or relationship difficulties.
Therapeutic alliance: The collaborative, trusting relationship between a client and therapist, including agreement on goals and tasks. A strong working relationship supports engagement and makes interventions more usable.
Cognitive behavioral therapy: A structured psychotherapy that targets interactions among thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Its techniques provide a prominent model for planned, goal-directed interventions.
Counseling: A professional helping relationship that supports people in addressing concerns, making decisions, and pursuing change. Interventions are the planned actions within the broader counseling process.
Psychiatric medication: Medication prescribed to treat mental health conditions by modifying biological processes. Medication is a distinct treatment modality that may complement counseling interventions.
Case formulation: A working explanation of how a person's difficulties developed and what maintains them. Formulation links a client's specific difficulties to a choice of intervention.
Motivational interviewing: A collaborative counseling method for strengthening a person's own motivation and commitment to change. It offers a focused intervention when ambivalence about change is central.
Psychotherapy: The treatment of psychological difficulties through structured psychological methods and a therapeutic relationship. Counseling interventions overlap with techniques used across psychotherapy traditions.
Coaching: A collaborative process focused on goals, performance, or personal development, generally outside mental health treatment. Coaching may address goals but does not necessarily involve clinical assessment or treatment.
Goal setting: The process of defining desired outcomes and specifying how progress toward them will be recognized. Clear goals give counseling actions direction and a basis for reviewing progress.
Solution-focused brief therapy: A brief therapy approach that builds on clients' goals, resources, and descriptions of preferred futures. Its questions and scaling methods show how interventions can emphasize strengths and solutions.
