Countee Cullen

Countee Cullen (1903–1946) was an American poet of the Harlem Renaissance whose work joined formal verse traditions with Black life and identity. His books include Color and The Black Christ and Other Poems.

Harlem Renaissance: A flowering of Black arts, literature, and intellectual life centered in Harlem during the 1920s and 1930s. Cullen became one of the movement’s leading poets.
Alain Locke: An American philosopher and writer who helped shape the Harlem Renaissance and edited The New Negro. Locke promoted Cullen’s work and included him in the movement’s defining anthology.
