Historic counties of England

Historic counties are England’s traditional territorial divisions, formed over centuries before modern local government. Their boundaries and names remain influential in regional identity, heritage, and historical geography.

Shires of England: English territorial divisions administered historically by sheriffs, many of which became counties. Many historic counties began as shires organized under Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.
County: A territorial division used for administration, representation, or geographic identification. Historic counties are one longstanding kind of territorial division called a county.
Historic county flag: A flag associated with a traditional English county, often adopted through local custom or later recognition. County flags turn historic county names and symbols into visible expressions of regional identity.
Yorkshire: A historic county in northern England, traditionally divided into the North, East, and West Ridings. Its vast area and historic ridings show how county structure could contain major internal divisions.
