County of Portugal

The County of Portugal was a medieval polity in the northwest Iberian Peninsula, ruled by counts under changing overlords. Its rulers’ expansion and independence laid the foundation for the Kingdom of Portugal.

Kingdom of Asturias: A Christian kingdom founded in northern Iberia in the eighth century, which resisted Muslim rule and expanded southward. Asturian expansion helped establish the Christian political frontier from which the county emerged.
Henry, Count of Portugal: A Burgundian noble who governed the County of Portugal from 1096 until his death in 1112. His rule strengthened the county’s autonomy while keeping it formally tied to León.

Portuguese language: A Romance language that developed in the western Iberian Peninsula and became Portugal’s principal language. The county’s territory lay within the region where early Portuguese developed.
Reconquista: The centuries-long expansion of Christian-ruled territories into the Iberian Peninsula under Muslim rule. The county’s territory and power grew amid this broader contest for Iberia.
Afonso I of Portugal: The first king of Portugal, who secured recognition of the kingdom’s independence in the twelfth century. His victory over Teresa’s forces began the county’s transition into a kingdom.
