County of Provence

The County of Provence was a historic territory in southeastern France, ruled by counts and countesses. It passed to the French crown in 1481 through inheritance.

Roman Provence: The Roman-controlled territory in southern Gaul that included much of present-day Provence. Roman provincial rule supplied the region’s name and an early political framework.
Douce I, Countess of Provence: A countess of Provence who inherited the county in 1112 and married Ramon Berenguer III of Barcelona. Her inheritance transferred Provence to the House of Barcelona.
