Crab louse

The crab louse (Pthirus pubis) is a small parasitic insect that feeds on human blood and lives mainly in coarse body hair. Its broad body and large claws help it grasp hairs.

Pthirus pubis: The species of louse that causes pubic lice infestation in humans. This is the crab louse’s scientific species name.
Pediculosis pubis: An infestation of humans by crab lice, commonly called pubic lice. This is the condition caused by crab lice.
Head louse: A louse species, Pediculus humanus capitis, that lives on the human scalp. It infests scalp hair rather than chiefly coarse body hair.
Sexual contact: Physical contact of a sexual nature between people. Close contact is the most common route by which crab lice spread.
Louse life cycle: The stages through which a louse develops from egg to nymph to adult. Eggs hatch on hair, and successive molts produce the adult crab louse.
Sexually transmitted infection: An infection transmitted primarily through sexual contact. Crab lice often spread through close sexual contact, though they are not microbes.
Body louse: A louse form, Pediculus humanus humanus, that lives mainly in clothing and feeds on human blood. Unlike crab lice, body lice shelter in clothing and can transmit serious infections.
Fomite: An object capable of carrying infectious or parasitic agents between hosts. Transmission through recently shared clothing or bedding is possible but less common.
Nit: A louse egg attached firmly to a hair shaft. Crab louse eggs are cemented to hairs near the skin.
Permethrin: An insecticide used in some topical treatments for lice and other ectoparasites. Topical permethrin is one option used to treat crab lice.
