Crab trap

A baited device designed to capture crabs by allowing them to enter while preventing or limiting their escape.

Crab pot: A rigid, baited enclosure with one or more entrances that retain captured crabs. This common trap form uses entrances that are easier to enter than exit.
Dungeness crab fishery: A commercial and recreational fishery targeting Dungeness crab along the Pacific coast of North America. Crab pots are central to harvesting this species in coastal waters.
Crab: A decapod crustacean with a broad carapace and usually a short abdomen tucked beneath its body. Crab anatomy and behavior determine which openings and enclosures can capture it.

Bycatch reduction device: A feature added to fishing gear to reduce capture of non-target animals. Escape openings and other modifications can reduce unwanted catches in crab pots.
Bait bag: A mesh container that holds bait inside fishing gear while allowing scent to disperse. It keeps bait accessible to crabs without letting them carry it away.
Recreational crabbing: The noncommercial capture of crabs for personal use, commonly from shores, docks, or boats. Small traps make crab capture accessible outside commercial fisheries.
