A designation for a region where complex urban societies first developed. It is most commonly applied to Mesopotamia and the broader Fertile Crescent.

Fertile Crescent: A crescent-shaped region of Southwest Asia with early agriculture and several ancient civilizations. This broader region is the most common geographic setting for the designation.

Ancient Egypt: A civilization centered on the Nile Valley, unified under pharaonic rule in the fourth millennium BCE. Egypt is another early center often included in accounts of civilization’s beginnings.
Independent invention: The separate emergence of a practice or institution in different societies without direct transmission. Independent urban developments challenge a single-origin interpretation of civilization.
Neolithic Revolution: The transition in several regions from foraging to food production and settled life. Agriculture supported the population growth and settlement needed for cities.
Uruk period: A period in southern Mesopotamia marked by the growth of cities, administration, and long-distance exchange. Uruk’s expansion offers a clear case of urban institutions taking shape.
