Creationism

Creationism is the belief that a divine creator brought life or the universe into existence. Some forms reject biological evolution or a scientifically ancient Earth, while others accept them.

Evolution: Evolution is the change in heritable characteristics of populations across generations. Creationism conflicts with evolutionary explanations when it attributes the origin or diversity of life directly to divine action.
Genesis creation narrative: The opening chapters of Genesis describe God creating the world, life, and humanity. Many creationist arguments begin with interpretations of these chapters.
Scopes trial: The 1925 Scopes trial tested a Tennessee law banning the teaching of human evolution in public schools. The trial made the American conflict over evolution and creationism a national controversy.
Creation and evolution in public education: Creation and evolution in public education concerns disputes over how origins should be taught in schools. Creationist campaigns have repeatedly sought changes to science curricula and textbook treatment.
Scientific creationism: Scientific creationism is an effort to support creationist claims using scientific arguments and evidence. This movement presents creationism as a scientific alternative to evolutionary biology.
Biblical literalism: Biblical literalism interprets scripture as conveying its meaning directly, with limited reliance on figurative readings. Literal readings of Genesis often underpin young Earth creationist accounts.
The Genesis Flood: The Genesis Flood is a 1961 book by John C. Whitcomb and Henry M. Morris advocating young Earth creationism. Its arguments helped establish modern creation science as an organized movement.
Separation of church and state: Separation of church and state is the constitutional principle limiting government establishment or sponsorship of religion. U.S. courts have used it to assess creationist policies in public schools.
Intelligent design: Intelligent design argues that some features of life or the universe are best explained by an intelligent cause. It shares creationism’s appeal to design but often avoids identifying the designer as God.
Common descent: Common descent is the hypothesis that organisms share ancestors over evolutionary time. Its account of life’s relationships conflicts with creationist rejection of shared ancestry.
