Creator deity

A god or divine being understood as the source of the universe, life, or both. Creator deities appear in religious traditions with widely differing accounts of creation.

Atum: An ancient Egyptian creator god who brought forth the first generation of deities. In Heliopolitan tradition, Atum begins creation through self-generation.
Creatio ex nihilo: The doctrine that the universe was created from nothing rather than from preexisting matter. It distinguishes creation by divine will from shaping an already existing cosmos.
Eternal universe: A cosmos with no beginning in time, existing without a first moment of creation. It contrasts with accounts in which a creator brings the universe into existence.
Cosmogony: An account or theory of how the universe originated and acquired its structure. Creator deities are central agents in many religious cosmogonies.
Ptah: An ancient Egyptian god associated with craftsmanship, creation, and the city of Memphis. Memphite theology presents Ptah creating through thought and speech.
Divine command: An act of creation or authority accomplished through a deity's spoken decree. Genesis portrays God bringing aspects of the world into being by speaking.
Pantheism: The view that God and the universe are identical or that the divine pervades all reality. It blurs the distinction between a creator and the cosmos that is created.
Theism: Belief in one or more gods, often understood as agents who can affect the world. Creator deities are one conception of the divine within theism.
Marduk: A Babylonian god who becomes king of the gods in the creation epic Enuma Elish. The epic makes Marduk's ordering of the cosmos a victory over Tiamat.
Cosmic egg: A mythic image of the universe or its first life emerging from an egg. It offers creation through incubation and emergence rather than a maker's direct act.
