Creole peoples

Creole peoples are communities whose identities and traditions formed through colonial-era cultural exchange, often involving mixed ancestry, in the Americas, Africa, and the Indian Ocean.

Atlantic slave trade: The forced transportation of millions of Africans across the Atlantic to the Americas from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries. Enslaved Africans and their descendants shaped many Creole populations and traditions across the Americas.
Louisiana Creoles: A diverse people of Louisiana whose historical identities developed under French and Spanish colonial rule. Their varied ancestry and traditions illustrate the changing meanings of Creole identity in North America.
Mestizo: A historical identity and social category associated with Indigenous and European ancestry in Latin America. Its regional history shows why mixed-ancestry labels cannot be treated as interchangeable with Creole.

Métis: An Indigenous people of Canada with distinct collective identity, history, and culture, rooted in Indigenous-European ancestry. Métis identity is a specific peoplehood, not a synonym for Creole or mixed ancestry.
Louisiana Creole French: A French-based creole language historically spoken in Louisiana. It preserves one linguistic legacy of Louisiana's Creole communities and colonial past.
Criollo people: In Spanish America, people of primarily European descent born in the colonies rather than in Spain. The colonial Spanish term contrasts with broader regional uses of Creole for culturally formed communities.
