Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) reduces opportunities for crime by shaping buildings and public spaces to support natural surveillance, controlled access, and clear territorial boundaries.

Natural surveillance: Design that lets occupants and passersby observe public or shared spaces. Windows, sightlines, and active frontages make potential offenders more visible.
Elizabeth Wood: A housing official whose 1961 book advocated design measures to improve safety in public housing. Her proposals anticipated later CPTED ideas about visibility, access, and resident involvement.
