Crimean offensive

The Soviet operation that recaptured Crimea from German and Romanian forces between April and May 1944, ending Axis control of the peninsula.

Fourth Ukrainian Front: A Soviet field formation that led the main assault into Crimea from the north in 1944. Its attack across the Perekop Isthmus broke into the peninsula and drove the campaign westward.
Siege of Sevastopol (1941–1942): A prolonged Axis siege that ended with the capture of Sevastopol in July 1942. The 1944 recapture reversed the outcome of this earlier campaign.
Fyodor Tolbukhin: A Soviet general who commanded the Fourth Ukrainian Front during the Crimean offensive. He directed the main northern assault and its advance toward Sevastopol.
Sevastopol Conference: A 1945 meeting in Sevastopol between Soviet, British, and American officials during the Yalta Conference period. The city regained in 1944 later became a setting for Allied diplomacy.
Separate Coastal Army: A Soviet army that advanced from the Kerch Peninsula during the 1944 Crimean campaign. Its push from the east converged with the northern offensive and pressured Axis forces from two directions.
Battle of the Kerch Peninsula: A 1942 German offensive that destroyed Soviet forces defending the Kerch Peninsula. Its defeat left the eastern gateway to Crimea under Axis control until Soviet forces returned.
Andrey Yeremenko: A Soviet general who commanded the Separate Coastal Army during the Crimean offensive. He led the eastern advance from the Kerch Peninsula.
Black Sea campaigns (1941–1944): Naval and coastal operations fought by Axis and Soviet forces in the Black Sea during the Second World War. The recapture of Crimea changed the strategic balance across this theater.
Perekop Isthmus: A narrow land corridor connecting Crimea to mainland Ukraine. The Soviet breakthrough here opened the northern route into Crimea.
Battle of the Dnieper: A 1943 campaign in which Soviet forces crossed the Dnieper and retook much of Ukraine. Soviet gains in Ukraine brought the front closer to Crimea's northern approaches.
