Croatian War of Independence

The 1991–1995 war in which Croatian forces fought to establish Croatia’s independence from Yugoslavia and defend it against Serbian and Yugoslav forces.

Battle of Vukovar: A 1991 siege and battle in which Yugoslav and Serbian forces captured the Croatian city of Vukovar after months of fighting. Its fall became the war’s defining early battle and exposed the scale of the conflict.
Breakup of Yugoslavia: The disintegration of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia into separate states during the late twentieth century. The federation’s collapse created the political crisis in which Croatia declared independence.
War in Bosnia and Herzegovina: A 1992–1995 conflict among Bosniak, Serb, and Croat forces during the breakup of Yugoslavia. The Croatian war overlapped with this conflict, involving Croatian forces and refugee movements across the border.
Republic of Serbian Krajina: A self-proclaimed Serb entity in parts of Croatia that existed from 1991 until its defeat and peaceful reintegration in 1995–1998. Its claim to separate statehood directly opposed Croatia’s sovereignty over the same territory.
Franjo Tuđman: The first president of independent Croatia, who led the country during the war and its early postwar years. As head of state, he directed Croatia’s independence policy and wartime government.
Operation Storm: A Croatian military offensive in August 1995 that regained most territory held by rebel Serb forces. The offensive shifted control of territory decisively in Croatia’s favor.
Croatian independence referendum, 1991: A May 1991 referendum in which an overwhelming majority of participating Croatian voters supported independence from Yugoslavia. The vote gave political backing to the move toward Croatian independence.
Croatian refugees and displaced persons: People forced to flee their homes in Croatia during the wars of the 1990s, including Croats and Serbs. Fighting and changing territorial control uprooted hundreds of thousands of people.
Republic of Croatia: A sovereign state in southeastern Europe that declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. The Croatian government’s claim to independent statehood was the central political aim defended in the war.
Slobodan Milošević: The president of Serbia from 1989 to 1997 and a dominant political figure during Yugoslavia’s breakup. His policies and influence over Serbian forces made him a central figure in the conflict.
