Crofton formula

The Crofton formula expresses a curve’s length as a constant times the average number of times it intersects lines, with lines averaged over position and orientation.

Invariant measure: A measure unchanged by specified transformations, such as rotations or translations. The line average requires a measure on lines that treats translated and rotated configurations consistently.
Euclidean length: The distance measured along a curve using the Euclidean metric. The formula recovers this ordinary notion of curve length from intersection data.
Augustin-Louis Cauchy: A French mathematician whose work shaped analysis, mechanics, and geometry in the nineteenth century. Cauchy established an early intersection-based relation between convex-curve length and averaged line crossings.
Stereology: The estimation of three-dimensional structure from lower-dimensional samples such as sections or projections. Stereological methods use intersection counts to estimate geometric quantities in materials and tissues.
Cauchy’s perimeter formula: A formula expressing a convex plane figure’s perimeter through the widths of its projections. It also averages directional data to recover perimeter, but uses widths rather than line intersections.
Cauchy-Crofton formula: A family of integral-geometric identities relating geometric measure to counts of intersections with test objects. This name often denotes the curve-length identity in the broader Crofton family.
Line space: The space whose points represent the lines in a given geometric setting. Averaging intersections means integrating over a suitably measured space of lines.
Morgenstern’s theorem: A theorem in integral geometry concerning the measure of sets through counts of intersections with lines. Its development belongs to the later mathematical setting in which Crofton-type identities were formalized.
Computerized tomography: An imaging method that reconstructs cross-sectional structure from measurements taken along many paths. Its line-indexed measurements share the integral-geometric logic of recovering hidden structure from projections.
Poincaré formula: An integral-geometric identity relating average intersections of curves to their lengths on a surface. It is a related averaging identity, specialized to curves intersecting one another rather than test lines.
