Cross-dressing

Cross-dressing is wearing clothing culturally associated with a gender different from the wearer’s assigned gender. It does not by itself determine a person’s gender identity or sexual orientation.

Gender expression: The outward presentation of gender through appearance, behavior, and other forms of expression. Cross-dressing is one way people express or explore gender through clothing.
Sumptuary law: A law regulating consumption or dress to enforce social distinctions and hierarchies. Such laws sometimes prescribed which garments people of different ranks or genders could wear.
Rrose Sélavy: A feminine persona adopted by artist Marcel Duchamp for photographs and other works. Duchamp used cross-gender presentation as part of an artistic exploration of identity.
Cross-casting: Casting an actor in a role traditionally associated with a different gender. It uses gender-crossing in theatre or film without requiring a character to cross-dress.
Dress code: A set of rules governing what people may wear in a particular setting. Formal and informal dress codes often define which clothing is considered appropriate for each gender.
Gender identity: A person’s internal understanding of their own gender. Clothing choices alone do not establish the wearer’s gender identity.
Joan of Arc: A fifteenth-century French military leader and Catholic saint who wore male clothing during parts of her life. Her clothing became central to her trial and its disputes over religious obedience.
Billy Tipton: An American jazz musician who lived publicly as a man for decades and was assigned female at birth. Tipton’s life is often discussed in relation to clothing, privacy, and gender identity.
Pantomime dame: A comic older-woman character traditionally played by a man in British pantomime. The role makes cross-dressing an established feature of a theatrical genre.
Gender policing: The enforcement of social expectations about how people should behave or appear based on gender. Cross-dressing can provoke sanctions when it violates local gender expectations.
