Crossbreeding

Crossbreeding is mating animals from different breeds, usually within one species, to combine inherited traits or increase hybrid vigor.

Heterosis: The improved performance of crossbred offspring relative to the average of their parental populations. Crossbreeding can produce this hybrid vigor, especially in traits such as fertility and survival.
Rotational crossbreeding: A system that alternates sire breeds across generations to maintain heterosis and produce replacement females. It sustains crossbred performance while allowing a herd to breed its own replacements.
Inbreeding: Mating between individuals that are more closely related than the population average. It increases relatedness within a line, whereas crossbreeding combines distinct breed backgrounds.
Genotype-by-environment interaction: A change in the relative performance of genotypes across different environments. A cross that performs well under one production system may not rank as well under another.
Dominance (genetics): An interaction in which one allele masks or modifies the effect of another allele at the same gene locus. Dominance helps explain why crossing breeds can improve traits without changing their average allele frequencies.
Terminal crossing: A system in which crossbred offspring are marketed rather than retained for breeding. It lets producers target market traits without requiring offspring to maintain a breeding population.
Outcrossing: Mating unrelated individuals within the same breed or population. It introduces less closely related genes without crossing breed boundaries.
Breed-specific heritability: The proportion of observed trait variation attributable to genetic differences in a particular population and environment. Heritability helps distinguish traits improved by selection within breeds from gains due to crossing.
Additive genetic variance: The portion of genetic variation attributable to the summed average effects of alleles on a trait. Additive effects determine which breed differences are passed predictably to crossbred offspring.
Three-breed cross: A mating system that combines three breeds, often using crossbred females and sires from a third breed. It can capture more heterosis and combine maternal and growth traits.
