Crown Dependencies

The Crown Dependencies are Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man: self-governing jurisdictions under the sovereignty of the British Crown, but outside the United Kingdom and its overseas territories.

Jersey: Jersey is a self-governing island jurisdiction in the English Channel and a Crown Dependency. It is one of the three jurisdictions that make up the Crown Dependencies.
Lieutenant Governor: A lieutenant governor is the Crown’s representative in a Crown Dependency. The office provides a formal link between the Crown and each island’s institutions.
British Overseas Territories: British Overseas Territories are territories under British sovereignty that are constitutionally distinct from the United Kingdom. Unlike Crown Dependencies, they are classified as overseas territories and have different constitutional arrangements.
Crown Dependency citizenship: People connected to the Crown Dependencies generally hold British citizenship under UK nationality law. Shared citizenship does not make the islands part of the United Kingdom.
Guernsey: Guernsey is a self-governing Crown Dependency comprising several islands in the English Channel. It is one of the three jurisdictions that make up the Crown Dependencies.
Privy Council of the United Kingdom: The Privy Council is a formal advisory body to the British monarch, composed largely of senior politicians and officials. Island legislation may receive royal approval through orders made by the monarch in Council.
British protectorate: A British protectorate was a territory whose external relations or protection were controlled by Britain without full annexation. The Crown Dependencies are not protectorates; their status rests on the Crown’s distinct relationship with the islands.
Foreign relations of the Crown Dependencies: The United Kingdom conducts international relations for the Crown Dependencies, which are not sovereign states. External representation is one of the responsibilities retained by the UK government.
Isle of Man: The Isle of Man is a self-governing island jurisdiction in the Irish Sea and a Crown Dependency. It is one of the three jurisdictions that make up the Crown Dependencies.
Royal assent: Royal assent is the monarch’s formal approval that makes a bill law. It is part of the process through which Crown Dependency legislation receives formal approval.
