Crown of Castile

A composite monarchy formed from the kingdoms of Castile and León and their territories. It became the principal political power in central Iberia and the chief institutional base of Spain’s overseas empire.

Cortes of Castile: The representative assemblies of the Crown of Castile, summoned by the monarch to discuss taxation and other matters. These assemblies negotiated taxation while the monarch governed the composite realm.
Kingdom of León: A medieval Christian kingdom in northwestern Iberia, originating in the ninth century. Its dynastic union with Castile in 1230 established the monarchy’s enduring core.
Isabella I of Castile: Queen of Castile from 1474 to 1504, whose marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon joined their dynasties. Her reign consolidated royal authority and launched Castile’s Atlantic expansion.

Council of the Indies: A royal body established in 1524 to advise the Spanish monarch on American and other overseas territories. It governed overseas possessions within the institutional tradition of Castilian royal councils.
Audiencias and Chancillerías: High courts in the Spanish monarchy that heard appeals and exercised judicial authority in designated territories. Their jurisdictions carried royal justice into major parts of the Crown.
Alfonso X of Castile: King of Castile and León from 1252 to 1284, known for legal, historical, and scientific projects. His reign strengthened royal law and administrative culture in the composite realm.
