Crucible steel

Crucible steel is steel produced by melting iron and carbon together in a sealed or covered crucible. The process yields a relatively homogeneous alloy with controlled carbon content.

Cementation process: A method of adding carbon to wrought iron by heating it in contact with carbon-rich material. Unlike crucible melting, cementation adds carbon by diffusion through solid iron.
Wootz steel production: The historical South Asian process of making high-carbon steel in small crucibles. It exemplifies an early, well-documented tradition of making steel directly from a crucible melt.
Tool steel: Steel formulated to retain hardness, resist wear, or withstand heat during cutting and shaping. Crucible steel enabled reliable, high-carbon material for cutting and working tools.
Bessemer process: A nineteenth-century steelmaking process that blows air through molten pig iron to remove impurities and excess carbon. It replaced slow, small-batch crucible production with large-scale conversion of molten iron.
Wootz steel: A high-carbon crucible steel produced historically in South Asia and traded across Asia and the Middle East. Wootz is a prominent crucible-steel tradition whose ingots developed distinctive carbide patterns.
Damascus steel: Historical patterned steel associated with blades made from imported crucible-steel ingots. Wootz crucible steel was traded and forged into blades associated with Damascus.
Sheffield plate: A laminated metal made by bonding silver to copper, developed in Sheffield in the eighteenth century. Sheffield's crucible-steel industry grew alongside its wider metalworking and cutlery trades.
Open-hearth furnace: A furnace process for making steel by refining a charge in a shallow hearth beneath a flame. Open-hearth furnaces produced much larger batches than individual crucibles.
Crucible: A heat-resistant vessel used to melt or process materials at high temperatures. Its refractory walls contain the charge while it reaches steelmaking temperatures.
Benjamin Huntsman: An English clockmaker who developed a successful crucible-steel process in the eighteenth century. His Sheffield process renewed crucible steelmaking for industrial tool production.
