Crusade of 1101

A series of Western European military expeditions to the Holy Land in 1101, following the First Crusade. Seljuk forces defeated the expeditions, which failed to reinforce the Latin states established in the East.

People's Crusade: An unofficial expedition of peasants and knights that reached Anatolia before the main armies of the First Crusade. Its survivors joined the 1101 expeditions, carrying forward an earlier defeat by Seljuk forces.
First Crusade: A Western European military campaign from 1096 to 1099 that captured Jerusalem and established Latin states in the eastern Mediterranean. The 1101 armies followed its success and aimed to strengthen its new eastern settlements.
William IX of Aquitaine: Duke of Aquitaine from 1086 to 1126 and a leading participant in the 1101 crusading expedition. He commanded the southern force destroyed near Heraclea.
Principality of Antioch: A Crusader state founded after the First Crusade around the city of Antioch in northern Syria. Its ruler Bohemond was captive during the expeditions, leaving the principality politically exposed.
Seljuk Turks: A Turkic dynasty that ruled much of the Middle East and Anatolia during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Seljuk armies used mobility and knowledge of Anatolian terrain to defeat the crusading columns.
Pope Paschal II: The head of the Catholic Church from 1099 to 1118, succeeding Urban II during the early crusading movement. His papacy inherited calls to support the Latin states after Jerusalem's capture.
Welf IV, Duke of Bavaria: A German noble who ruled Bavaria and joined the 1101 expedition to the Holy Land. He shared command of the army defeated at Heraclea.
Danishmendids: A Turkoman dynasty that ruled parts of central and northern Anatolia from the late eleventh century. Their capture of Bohemond contributed to the dangers faced by the 1101 crusaders.
Battle of Mersivan: A 1101 battle in Anatolia in which Seljuk forces defeated a crusader army led by Raymond IV of Toulouse. It was a decisive defeat in the northern route taken by one of the expeditions.
Urban II: The pope whose 1095 call at Clermont helped launch the First Crusade. His preaching inspired a continuing wave of western crusading commitments after 1099.
