Cryogenics and vacuum technology engineer very low temperatures and low-pressure environments. They enable controlled conditions for processes and instruments that cannot operate in ordinary air or at ambient temperatures.

Cryogenic refrigeration: The production of temperatures low enough to liquefy gases or enable low-temperature applications. It describes the cooling cycles and equipment used to reach cryogenic temperatures.
Absolute zero: The lowest possible thermodynamic temperature, defined as zero kelvins. It anchors the temperature scale used to describe cryogenic conditions.
Magnetic resonance imaging: A medical imaging technique that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce images of the body. Many MRI magnets use cryogenic cooling to maintain superconducting operation.
Mechanical refrigeration: Cooling produced by machines that circulate a working fluid through a thermodynamic cycle. It often provides precooling or moderate refrigeration, while cryogenic systems target much lower temperatures.
Superconductivity: The loss of electrical resistance in certain materials below a critical temperature. Cryogenic cooling makes superconductivity usable in magnets, sensors, and power systems.
Vacuum pump: A device that removes gas molecules from a sealed volume to reduce its pressure. Pumps create and sustain the low pressures required by vacuum systems.
Thermodynamic temperature: A measure of temperature defined independently of the properties of any particular substance. Cryogenic engineering depends on precise temperature measurement and thermodynamic limits.
Particle accelerator: A machine that uses electromagnetic fields to accelerate charged particles. Accelerators use vacuum beam pipes and may use cryogenic systems for superconducting magnets.
Liquid nitrogen: Nitrogen in liquid form, boiling at about 77 kelvins at atmospheric pressure. It is a common cryogen, but its fixed boiling point limits the temperatures it can provide.
Surface science: The study of physical and chemical processes at interfaces and material surfaces. Vacuum prevents contamination that would obscure or alter clean surfaces.
