Crypsis

Crypsis is an adaptation that makes an organism difficult for other organisms to detect, often by reducing visual, auditory, or chemical cues.

Camouflage: Coloration, pattern, or form that helps an organism blend into its surroundings. Background matching is the best-known visual route to concealment.
Predator–prey interaction: An ecological interaction in which one organism captures and consumes another. Crypsis often evolves within the opposing pressures of hunting and avoiding capture.
Leaf insect: An insect whose body resembles a leaf in shape, color, and often surface detail. Its leaf-like form conceals it among foliage through both background resemblance and masquerade.
Aposematism: The use of conspicuous signals to warn predators that an organism is toxic, dangerous, or unpalatable. It reduces attack by being noticed, the opposite of avoiding detection.
Disruptive coloration: Color patterns that break up an animal’s outline or create misleading boundaries. Contrasting patches can hide body shape even when they do not match the background.
Sensory ecology: The study of how organisms acquire and use information through their senses in natural environments. What counts as concealed depends on the senses available to an observer.
Flounder: A flat-bodied fish that rests on the seafloor and can alter its coloration to resemble the substrate. Its changing pattern shows how concealment can respond to a local background.
Mimicry: A resemblance between organisms that alters how an observer responds to one or both of them. Mimicry redirects recognition toward another organism, whereas crypsis generally reduces recognition.
Countershading: A color pattern with a darker upper surface and a lighter underside, reducing the appearance of shading. It cancels the light-and-shadow cues that make a body appear three-dimensional.
Signal detection theory: A framework for analyzing how observers distinguish a signal from noise under uncertainty. It clarifies how concealment changes the chance that a target will be detected.
