Cryptic species

Cryptic species are distinct species that are difficult to distinguish using visible traits alone. They may differ genetically, ecologically, behaviorally, or in less obvious anatomy.

DNA barcoding: A method that identifies organisms by comparing short, standardized DNA sequences. A barcode sequence can reveal lineages that visual identification groups together.
Convergent evolution: The independent evolution of similar traits in different evolutionary lineages. Similar forms can evolve separately, making unrelated species look alike.
