Crystal field theory

Crystal field theory models how electrostatic interactions with surrounding ligands split the energies of a transition-metal ion’s d orbitals. The splitting helps explain coordination complexes’ colors, magnetism, and preferred geometries.

Octahedral crystal field: The crystal-field pattern in which six ligands surround a metal ion along the Cartesian axes. It produces the characteristic lower-energy t₂g and higher-energy e_g orbital sets.
High-spin and low-spin complexes: Coordination complexes distinguished by whether d electrons occupy higher orbitals before pairing in lower orbitals. The balance between splitting and pairing energies determines the spin state.
Coordination complex: A species in which a central atom or ion is bonded to surrounding ligands through coordinate bonds. Crystal field theory describes the metal-centered electronic structure of these compounds.
Ligand field theory: A molecular-orbital treatment of metal–ligand bonding that includes covalent interactions. It extends the electrostatic picture to explain covalency and orbital mixing.
Tetrahedral crystal field: The crystal-field pattern produced by four ligands at the vertices of a tetrahedron around a metal ion. Its d-orbital splitting reverses the octahedral ordering and is usually smaller.
Magnetochemistry: The study of how magnetic properties reveal the electronic structure of substances. Unpaired d electrons predicted by the model account for many complex ions’ magnetic moments.
Transition metal: An element whose atom or common cation has an incomplete d subshell. Partially filled d orbitals make the model’s splitting and electron occupancy relevant.
Molecular orbital theory: A theory that describes electrons in molecules as occupying orbitals extending over multiple atoms. Its delocalized orbitals provide a broader framework for interpreting metal–ligand bonding.
Ligand field splitting energy: The energy gap between d-orbital sets split by the field of surrounding ligands. Its size determines whether electrons pair in lower orbitals or occupy higher ones.
Transition metal complex color: Color produced when a transition-metal complex absorbs selected wavelengths of visible light. Light-driven transitions between split d orbitals can create absorption bands.
