Cubic crystal system

One of the seven crystal systems, with three equal-length crystallographic axes meeting at right angles. Its defining symmetry permits four threefold rotation axes along the body diagonals.

Crystal system: A classification of crystals based on unit-cell geometry and symmetry. The cubic system is one of the seven standard crystal-system classes.
Simple cubic: A cubic Bravais lattice with lattice points only at the eight cube corners. It is the primitive lattice type within the cubic system.
Alpha iron: The body-centered cubic form of iron stable below about 912 °C at atmospheric pressure. It is a familiar elemental example of a body-centered cubic crystal.
Tetragonal crystal system: A crystal system with three mutually perpendicular axes, two equal in length and one different. It shares cubic right angles but has only two equal-length axes.
Unit cell: The repeating structural unit whose translations generate a crystal lattice. A cubic unit cell expresses the system’s equal edges and right angles.
Body-centered cubic: A cubic Bravais lattice with points at cube corners and one point at the body center. Its body-center translation produces a distinct cubic lattice.
Copper: A chemical element and ductile metal with a face-centered cubic crystal structure. Copper exemplifies how a cubic structure occurs in a widely used metal.
Orthorhombic crystal system: A crystal system with three unequal axes meeting at right angles. It retains cubic right angles while removing equality among the axes.
Crystal lattice: A periodic array of points representing the translational symmetry of a crystal. Cubic crystal structures arise from lattices compatible with cubic symmetry.
Face-centered cubic: A cubic Bravais lattice with points at cube corners and at every face center. Face centering gives the cubic system its densest Bravais lattice.
